List Of Episodes For The Inspector Alleyn Mysteries
The Inspector Alleyn Mysteries is a television series adapted from nine of the Inspector Alleyn novels by Ngaio Marsh. The programme was originally broadcast between 23 December 1990 and 29 August 1994 on BBC1. Beginning with a pilot, there followed two series consisting eight episodes, with each episode based on a separate novel.
In the pilot episode, Artists In Crime, Detective Chief Inspector Roderick Alleyn of the Criminal Investigation Department, Metropolitan Police (London) was played by Simon Williams. However, when production for the first series began, Simon Williams was unavailable, and so the lead character was henceforth played by Patrick Malahide.
Ngaio Marsh’s Roderick Alleyn is a gentleman detective. Throughout her novels, he is clearly shown to be a member of the gentry. The younger brother of a baronet, Sir George Alleyn, Roderick Alleyn was raised in Buckinghamshire where his mother, Lady Alleyn, continues to live. He graduated from Oxford and thereafter served in the army for three years in World War I, then spent a year in the British Foreign Service. He finally joined the Metropolitan Police as a constable.
Ngaio Marsh's thirty two novels form a chronological series that follows Roderick Alleyn's detective career. When the series opens (A Man Lay Dead), he is aged about forty and is already a Detective Chief Inspector in the Criminal Investigation Department at Scotland Yard. As the series progresses, he marries and has a son, and eventually rises to the rank of Chief Superintendent.
