E S Posthumus was an independent music group that produced cinematic style-music. Their style was a form of classical that intertwined popular-style drum rhythms with orchestral and electronic sounds. Their music was inspired by the Pythagorean philosophy which states that "...music is the harmonization of opposites; the conciliation of warring elements...". The E S is an acronym for Experimental Sounds, while Posthumus is a 'Dog' Latin (imitation Latin) word used as a means to represent 'all things past'.

The music of E S Posthumus has been licensed by many film and television production studios, and used in numerous film trailers and television programmes. In their entire career, E S Posthumus had released three albums viz-a-viz Unearthed, Cartographer and Makara. In addition, the group had written numerous compositions for sports programmes which included the NFL on CBS, Super Bowl XLIV, MLB Tonight, The Masters, The PGA Championship and The US Open. Their three singles are Rise To Glory, Run This Town / Posthumus Zone, and Christmas Eve.
Formed in 2000, the group consisted brothers Helmut and Franz Vonlichten, who studied piano with their mother. After graduating from high school, Franz worked in recording studios. Helmut went on to further his studies and subsequently graduated from the University Of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), with a degree in archaeology. On 22 July 2010, it was officially announced that Franz had passed away about two months before in May. After giving notice of his brother's death, Helmut stated that while there still may be one or two unreleased songs (one of them being their single Christmas Eve released in November 2010), E S Posthumus would no longer be active. |

After Franz’s passing, Helmut had two desires: the first was to preserve and continue the spirit and work of his brother and the second was to evolve into a new sound. The relationship between Helmut and Nihl grew even stronger through the loss, and the creative fire was set ablaze. For over a year the two sketched, constructed, deconstructed, reconstructed and recorded all over the globe in search of their palette. At once, they created musical, palette, lyrical and arcing story themes of time/space/dimension travel and the universal desire to find home. It was this process that defined Les Friction. - lesfriction.com

Unearthed
Unearthed, the first album composed by E S Posthumus, was originally made available for purchase online through the CD Baby website (an online music store specializing in the sale of CDs and digital music downloads from independent musicians to consumers: CD Baby (retail store), CD Baby.net (information for musicians)) in January 2001. It became the third-biggest selling album in CD Baby's history. The success of the album prompted the wide re-release to retail in May 2005 through Wigshop and 33rd Street Records/Bayside Distribution.
A key piece to the distinctive sound of the music came from working with the Northwest Sinfonia. In an interview with SoundtrackNet, the group said, "...we wanted the chance to blow an ungodly sum of cash working with a big orchestra...". Other musicians who performed on this CD included Pedro Eustache, Michael Landau, Matt Laug, Lance Morrison, Davy Spillane and Efrain Toro.
Track Listing
In keeping with the theme of 'all things past', each of the thirteen tracks on the album was named after an ancient and abandoned or destroyed city. However, Cuzco, Nara, Isfahan, and Estremoz still survive to this day.
01. "Antissa" - 5:12
02. "Tikal" - 3:47

Media Usage
Many tracks from Unearthed have been featured in various film trailers and television programmes. For film trailers, the escalating structure of these tracks makes them well-suited for dramatic montages, building towards the credits in these trailers.
An excerpt from the track Nara was used as the main theme for the CBS television programme Cold Case. A vocal rise performed by a female solo singer (Elise Morris) leads into the opening title, where one of the verses of Nara is then played for the remainder of the sequence, concluding with a short melody from a woodwind instrument. At the time, when Executive Producer Jerry Bruckheimer chose the song to be used in the programme, he had never actually met the Vonlichten brothers in person. Additionally, Michael A Levine, a musical composer for television programmes and advertisements, created a re-worked version of Nara that was played during the programme's closing credits (as it was provided by the studio, though not as it was shown on CBS). The track was also featured in the animation for the presentation of the design for the Beijing WaterCube by the architectural firm LAVA.
The track Ebla was used as the main-menu music for the 2008 racing video game Ferrari Challenge: Trofeo Pirelli.
A track from Unearthed was also used in the BBC television series Top Gear, as well as its stage programme Top Gear Live.
The following list provides details on the film trailers that have featured tracks from Unearthed.

Cartographer
Cartographer, the second album from E S Posthumus, was supposed to be released some time in 2006, but was only released in early 2007. The delay was not officially known and could only be conjectured, eventually being put down to the Vonlichten brothers' ill-concern with deadlines. Rumour has it however it was due to the addition of Luna Sans to the group of musicians; an addition much heralded by Helmut Vonlichten.
The vocal tracks on Cartographer are sung by Luna Sans, while the remix versions replace her vocals with instrumental solos and choir melodies, much in the style of E S Posthumus' first album Unearthed.
As of 17 January 2008, a new section was added to the official website of E S Posthumus, with the focus being on the new album.
When Cartographer was released on the CD Baby website, it had the following album description.

When Cartographer was released on the CD Baby website, it had the following album description.
In 1929, the ancient map "Piri Reis" was discovered in Istanbul. The map is extraordinary because it depicts bays and islands on the Antarctic coast which have been concealed under ice for at least 6,000 years. What civilization was capable of such exploration that long ago? On "Cartographer", we imagine that these explorers were from the tiny island of Numa in the Southern Indian Ocean. As advanced seafarers, they navigated every corner of the Earth. We have created a language unique to them and tell stories through song that describe their creation, discoveries and ultimate demise. This is a 2 CD collection with Vocal and Remix versions of every song. The Remix CD also contains 2 bonus tracks. - E S Posthumus: Cartographer

Makara
According to CD Baby, when E S Posthumus' new single Arise (Theme of the AFC Championship on CBS) was released, the description of the song hinted that the new album would be called Deciphered. However, in an interview with the group, which was posted on Original Sound Version in December 2009, it was stated that would no longer be the case. The album was henceforth released as Makara consisting fifteen tracks and was first made available on eMusic on 26 January 2010. Then on 2 February 2010 digital downloads was made available on iTunes, Amazon MP3, and several other popular download services. Makara is available on both CD and for digital download at CD Baby. There may possibly be a vinyl release of the album in the future.

Christmas Eve
Christmas Eve is a single released in November 2010 as a Christmas tribute to Franz Vonlichten.
The Vonlichten brothers began work on a holiday project in early March 2010, and had planned for it to be released during the holiday season. According to Helmut then, the project would be a re-arrangement of their favourite holiday songs and will "...bring something new to the party...". This track was however the only song they managed to start recording on, before Franz passed away in May 2010.
In a Facebook posting in mid-November 2010 on the group's fanpage, Helmut stated that “..when Franz passed away last May, the project was barely off the ground; however, a lyric, piano sketch and rough vocal were completed on the new song...”. In that same posting, Helmut said that he had contacted Jeremy Lubbock, the brothers' childhood favourite music arranger, to arrange the song for him. Helmut then salvaged the rough vocal recorded months earlier and included it in the final recording.
Christmas Eve is therefore the last song produced by E S Posthumus and a product of the Vonlichten brothers' last recording session before Franz's passing.
